Po'Girl

The lineup….

Po'GirlPo’Girl showcases a wide array of instruments-from gutbucket bass, accordion, clarinet, banjo, dobro, guitar, to electric bass, glockenspiel, piano, harmonica, bicycle bells, drums—and the artists all frequently trade off instruments with each song. Po’Girl fluid and joyous musicality is one of the group’s most endearing and irresistible features. Impossible to put this band in a tidy little box-they’re equally at home in Douala, Cameroon playing the Massao World Music Festival, as they are at the International Jazz Festival in Montreal, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Woodford Music Festival in Australia or just playing for fun for the people in Vondel Park, Amsterdam.

Fran SmithPerforming in her hometown of Wakefield, Fran Smith’s idiosyncratic piano-poetry is delivered in a passionate, Yorkshire-accented voice that defies comparison. Her lyrics, however, recall Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell - soulful torch songs, dripping with imagery. She admits to being ‘obsessed with song lyrics’ from an early age, so it is unsurprising that Fran’s own material has caught the attention of acclaimed songwriters such as Devon Sproule, Karine Polwart and Catherine Feeny.

Kayla KavanaghKayla Kavanagh is a solo artist with a difference. The Yorkshire-based Singer/Songwriter plays nine instruments, writes and performs her own original music and has toured the UK with her ‘one-woman band’ show from the side of a VW Campervan. Kayla has launched her debut album Stranger than Fiction, featuring twelve original songs with her trademark fusion of the traditional and modern - an eclectic mix of electronica pop/rock with hints of Imogen Heap, Nerina Pallot, Eva Cassidy and Sarah McLachlan. After this performance Kayla’s next stop after The Orangery is the Edinburgh Fringe!
