Beam announces dates for the second series
Following the success of The Orangery Academy summer programme Beam and Integreat PLUS are pleased to announce a second series of events throughout Autumn / Winter 2011.
The Orangery Academy focuses on key issues relating to policy, community involvement, design and the arts in response to the current and future challenges and opportunities of place-making.
The Orangery Academy is recognised CPD by the Institute Economic Development and the Royal Town Planning Institute.


Event Programme
1. Art, Technology and our Public Spaces
Wednesday 26 October 2011 : 3pm – 7.30pm : York Castle Museum, York
Explore the role that arts combined with technology can play in our public spaces and take part in an exclusive tour around Illuminating York on the opening night of the festival!
Confirmed Speakers include: Jo Fairfax, Artist and NESTA Fellow, Gill Cooper, Head of Arts & Culture City of York Council, and Steve Manthorp, Artist, Director ACT Ltd.
Delegates will:
- Gain a valuable insight into arts & technology projects from 3 perspectives – the commissioner, the artist and the funder
- Learn about the benefits and the applications of arts & technology projects
- Gain knowledge of the funding available for such projects

3. Housing, Health and Wellbeing
Wednesday 23 November 2011 : 12.30pm – 4.30pm : The Orangery, Wakefield.
Explore the impact that housing design can have on health and wellbeing.
Confirmed Speakers include: Peter O’Brien, Former Planning and Design Advisor for Transform South Yorkshire, Sam Sykes, Asset Strategy Manager Together Housing Association.
Delegates will:
- Gain a national perspective on the future of housing design
- Learn about the latest thinking in how housing design impacts on health and wellbeing
- Gain a better understanding of how community involvement in the design process can support the development of sustainable neighbourhood
4. Capturing Economic Value in Quality Place making
Wednesday 7th December 2011 : 12.30pm – 4.30pm : The Orangery, Wakefield.
Explore the latest thinking in capturing economic value in quality places.
Confirmed Speakers include: Richard Motley, Managing Director IntegreatPLUS, Patrick Bowes, Chief Economist Yorkshire Forward, Irena Bauman, Founder and Director Bauman Lyons, Graeme Collinge, Partner Genecon.
Delegates will:
- Gain an insight on the latest thinking, approaches and perspectives on the economic impact of Quality Places
- Learn from ‘seasoned’ economists and consultants, practioners about importance of capturing this evidence in positioning quality place based investment outcomes
- Have the opportunity to network with a range of built environment and economic development professionals
