Barnsley LIFT Programme
Public artworks to enhance the healing environment
Project Summary
The Barnsley LIFT Programme was an integrated process of creative engagement activities and permanent artworks for 4 new health sites across Barnsley, managed by Beam in partnership with Barnsley Community Soutions, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, NHS Barnsley and Morgan Sindall.
Artists were commissioned to work within the community in each centre area and produce artworks within the facilities that made a positive contribution to the internal and external environments of the new centres.
Building relationships with the local communities, families and service users was key, as well as generating creative opportunities for staff.
What did we do?
We worked in 4 different locations – Hoyland, Great Houghton, Darton and Athersley/ New Lodge with each centre having unique commissions by different artists.

Fabric Lenny (aka Paul Slater) collaborated with St. Helen’s Catholic Primary School and West Meadows Primary School to create artwork for the new library space. Paul worked with community groups so that their designs could be installed in the interior of the library, including vinyl window artwork, bookcase end panels, a book and a short film.
Jane Revitt designed bespoke seating to enhance the waiting areas within the Hoyland Centre inspired by the topograpgy of the area.

Darton:
Catherine Scriven worked with local residents, school children and the Barnsley Museum Service in order to present visual and oral history archive material about the former Darton Urban District Council Offices, on the site of which the new centre was built.

Great Houghton:
Beam worked with a group of local residents from Great Houghton to support them to select artworks to purchase for the new Centre. A number of workshops were organised plus a visit to local galleries in Barnsley. A piece ‘Bluebells’ by Peter Griffiths, a vinyl artwork based on the local ‘Blue Bell Woods’, was commissioned by the group.
