We are pleased to launch an open call for 3 temporary artist opportunities as part of the Dewsbury Creative Town arts programme.

These commissions are part of the Nurturing Creativity strand, designed for artists or artist collectives based in or with strong connections to Kirklees, aimed at engaging artists early in their careers or seeking to gain more experience of creating work in the public realm. We are also open to joint applications from early career artists proposing to work collaboratively with artists with more experience of working in the public realm.

Each commission has a different focus:

Contemporary Large Scale Mural:

  • A number of locations are under consideration for an artist to develop a bespoke, contemporary design, inspired by nature, flora and fauna, and landscapes within and surrounding the town.
  • The appointed artist will develop opportunities to engage with students and residents of the local community.
  • We welcome applications from artists working in the fields of street art, murals, illustration, large-scale painting and graphic design.

Contemporary Mural Dewsbury Arcade – Design Opportunity:

  • An artist commission to create a vibrant, eye-catching contemporary mural design for boarding which is to be fitted at either end of Dewsbury Arcade, screening and protecting the building whilst stabilisation building works are in progress.
  • The design must signal to residents the exciting transformation process which is underway and look to the future of this much-loved historic town centre building. The appointed Artist must draw from engagement with the community as part of the design development process
  • We welcome applications from Artists working in the fields of street art, murals, illustration, textiles, large scale painting, social engagement, surface pattern and graphic design.

Temporary Textiles Public Art Installation:

  • For this commission we are working in partnership with the WOVEN in Kirklees Festival.
  • The artwork will take the form of a temporary physical installation in Dewsbury town centre during the WOVEN 2021 festival (5 – 27 June). Using the medium of contemporary textiles, the work will be designed to raise awareness about the climate emergency and encourage positive change. The work should be ambitious and relevant to residents of Kirklees.
  • We welcome applications from artists working in the fields of textiles, 3D and installation.

Dewsbury Creative Town Arts Programme is a three year arts programme which will include a series of art interventions in the town. It is funded by Kirklees Council and forms part of the Dewsbury Blueprint initiative, a 10 year plan seeking to honour the heritage of the town, build on recent investments and make the town more attractive.

The programmes main aim is to enhance the town through art in public spaces and will focus on six key themes: Fabric of Place, Playful Spaces, Nurturing Creativity, Young Innovators, Creative Thinkers and Reconnecting the Town.
